The Season Between Not Knowing and Becoming

One of the strangest experiences in life is realizing that something needs to change before you know exactly what that change is.

It often starts as a feeling.

A feeling that you’ve outgrown a version of yourself. That the life you’ve built no longer fits quite the way it used to. Something is calling you forward, even if you can’t yet see where it’s leading.

For a while, it’s easy to ignore.

You tell yourself you’re tired. Burned out. Unmotivated. Maybe you convince yourself that you just need a vacation, a new routine, or a change of scenery. But deep down, you know it’s something more.

I’ve experienced this feeling several times throughout my life. Looking back, I don’t think it was burnout at all. I think it was growth.

It was the realization that I had reached the edge of a chapter that was no longer challenging me, expanding me, or helping me become the person I wanted to be.

The difficult part is that recognizing a need for change often comes long before knowing what comes next.

That space in between can feel incredibly uncomfortable.

You may find yourself questioning everything. You may start changing your habits, exploring new interests, pulling away from things that once felt familiar, or craving experiences that feel completely different from your normal routine.

From the outside, it can look confusing. Even to yourself.

But I think these moments are often signs that you’re becoming.

In this season of my life, I’ve experienced tremendous changes in the way I see myself. My confidence has grown. I trust my decisions more. I no longer spend as much time second-guessing myself or looking for permission from others.

But there was a period before that growth arrived that felt almost unbearable.

It felt like my entire world was shifting beneath my feet. Like everything I thought I knew was changing.

What I’ve come to realize is that I wasn’t losing control.

I was taking control.

I was making decisions that aligned with the person I knew I wanted to become, even when those decisions felt uncertain, uncomfortable, or lonely.

This post is for anyone who finds themselves in that same space.

The space between who you were and who you’re becoming.

The space where nothing feels certain, but something inside of you knows it’s time to move forward anyway.

Because sometimes the most transformative seasons of our lives begin before we have any idea where they’re leading us.

When you feel the shift

Have you ever felt like you were outgrowing your life? Like your aspirations were becoming too big for the rooms you were sitting in. Or the conversations that once excited you no longer held your attention. Like you were beginning to see the world differently than the people around you.

I think one of the clearest signs that you’re growing is when your current environment starts to feel uncomfortable. Not because there’s anything inherently wrong with it, but because you’ve changed. Your interests evolve, goals expand, and standards shift. The things that once felt aligned no longer feel like a reflection of who you’re becoming.

This can be a confusing experience because, from the outside, your life may look exactly the same.

You may still have the same job, the same friends, the same routines, and the same surroundings. But internally, something feels different. You feel you’re being called toward something more, even if you can’t yet explain what that “more” is.

The season of growth

During this season, it’s easy to become discouraged when parts of your old life continue showing up. Old habits, old fears, old patterns, and old circumstances don’t disappear overnight.

Growth is rarely a clean break from the past.

Instead, it requires you to continue showing up as the person you’re becoming, even when your external reality hasn’t caught up yet. To keep making decisions from the perspective of your future self. You honor the standards you’ve set for yourself, deciding to choose courage over comfort.

You continue moving forward even when you’re unsure of the next step. Because that is where real change happens. Not when you feel completely confident.

Not when everything makes sense. But when you choose to trust yourself despite the uncertainty.

Over time, something remarkable begins to happen.

The decisions that once felt uncomfortable start to feel natural. The habits that once required effort become part of who you are. The version of yourself you were working toward slowly becomes your new normal.

And eventually, the world around you begins to reflect the changes that first took place within you.

Trusting yourself before the evidence exists

One of the hardest parts of growth is that you rarely receive confirmation before you begin.

Most of us want certainty.

We want a guarantee that the risk will pay off, that the decision is correct, and that everything will work out exactly as planned. We want evidence that we’re moving in the right direction before we’re willing to take the first step.

But growth doesn’t usually work that way.

In my experience, the biggest transformations in my life happened because I was willing to trust myself before I had proof that I should.

Before the new opportunity appeared or I felt confident. Before anyone else understood what I was doing.

There were moments when I questioned myself constantly. Moments when I wondered if I was making the wrong decision or if I should simply return to what felt familiar.

But every time I chose to trust myself anyway, I strengthened the relationship I had with myself. That’s what confidence actually is. Confidence isn’t believing you’ll never fail. It’s believing that you’ll be okay regardless of the outcome.

When you’re becoming a new version of yourself, there will be periods where your external reality provides very little reassurance. The results haven’t arrived yet. The opportunities haven’t appeared yet. The vision still feels far away.

This is where many people turn back.

Not because they’re incapable of creating the life they want, but because they mistake uncertainty for a sign to stop. What if uncertainty isn’t a sign to stop? What if it’s simply proof that you’re entering territory you’ve never explored before?

Sometimes the greatest act of self-trust is continuing forward without needing immediate evidence that you’re on the right path.

The person you’re becoming is already here

One of the biggest misconceptions about growth is that one day you’ll wake up and suddenly become the person you’ve always wanted to be. You’ll feel confident, have all the answers, and finally feel ready.

At least, that’s what I used to think.

I believed there would be a moment where everything would click into place. A moment where I would finally feel like I had become the version of myself I had always envisioned.

But what I’ve learned is that transformation rarely happens all at once. It happens gradually, in the small decisions you make every day.

The person you’re becoming isn’t waiting for you somewhere in the future. She’s being created right now. Every time you choose yourself, set a boundary, or take a risk despite being afraid.

Every time you trust your intuition instead of seeking approval or choose growth over comfort. You become her.

Standing in your power

I think one of the most powerful shifts that happened during my own journey was realizing that I didn’t need to wait for external circumstances to change before I allowed myself to embody the person I wanted to be.

I didn’t need a different job to become more confident or a certain amount of money to trust myself. Not everything in my life needed to be perfect before I could begin acting like the person I wanted to become.

The qualities I admired most already existed within me. They simply needed space to grow. And I think the same is true for all of us.

So often we place our future selves on a pedestal, imagining them as someone completely different from who we are today. But what if the person you’re becoming isn’t someone new? What if she’s simply the most authentic version of who you’ve always been?

The season between not knowing and becoming can feel uncomfortable because so much of it happens beneath the surface. There are no grand announcements. No dramatic transformations.

Just a series of quiet decisions that slowly reshape your life. Then one day, you look around and realize that the life you once imagined is beginning to feel familiar.

Not because it happened overnight, but because you became the person capable of creating it.

The person you’re becoming isn’t waiting for you in the future. She’s already here.

She’s present in every decision you make that aligns with the life you want to create.

Embracing the unknown

As you continue moving through the uncertainty of what comes next, something unexpected begins to happen. The unknown becomes a little less scary.

Instead of constantly searching for answers, you start becoming comfortable with the fact that not everything needs to be figured out right away.

You begin to trust the process, to trust yourself. And because of that, life starts to feel different.

You become more present. More open. More willing to embrace opportunities that appear unexpectedly. You stop trying to control every outcome and start allowing yourself to experience life as it unfolds.

There is something incredibly freeing about realizing that you don’t need to know exactly where you’re going in order to enjoy where you are.

Finding joy in the journey of becoming

In many ways, the season between not knowing and becoming teaches you how to find joy in the journey itself. You become curious about what’s ahead and begin to see uncertainty as possibility rather than fear.

You start recognizing that every challenge, every setback, and every unexpected turn has helped shape the person you are becoming.

That doesn’t mean life suddenly becomes easy. There will still be moments of doubt and discomfort. Moments where you wish you had all the answers.

But those moments no longer control you the way they once did. Because you’ve developed something far more valuable than certainty.

You’ve developed trust. Trust in your ability to adapt, make decisions, and to handle whatever comes next.

I think that’s where true peace comes from.

Not from knowing exactly how everything will work out, but from knowing that no matter what happens, you’ll be able to navigate it.

It’s a quieter kind of confidence. A deeper kind of happiness.

A feeling that everything doesn’t need to be perfect in order to be good.

And when you reach that place, you realize that the unknown was never something to fear.

It was the place where your growth was waiting for you all along.
